Why Should I Replace My Garage Door?

Posted on: 16 October 2020

Even though garage doors have an extremely long life—at least 20 years, by some estimates—like everything else in your home, it'll eventually need to be replaced. In some cases though, you may choose to replace its well before its expiration date; below are some of the reasons why homeowners make that decision.

Because of Damage

Garage doors are extremely durable and can stand up to years of abuse, but every once in awhile a storm can roll through and damage it enough that it needs to be replaced. If this happens, a new garage door installation is not an option as much as it is a necessity, particularly if the repair bills are significant enough. When deciding whether to repair your garage door or replace it entirely, a good rule of thumb is to consider the cost of repairs. If it's more than 50% the price of a new garage door, opt for a replacement instead. Cosmetic damage may be bad, but if the storm has damaged the actual mechanics of the garage door, your repair bills can increase significantly.

Because You Want to Upgrade

Home technology has increased significantly over the last couple of decades, and your garage door is no different. Newer garage doors offer certain layers of insulation that can make your home more energy-efficient, saving you hundreds—potentially even thousands—of dollars in utility bills, essentially paying for itself over the life of the garage door. Alternatively, newer features also allow you to create a customized look for your garage door that is more coherent with your home's external aesthetics, such as colors and textures that can be incorporated with metal or vinyl doors. This makes a new garage door installation a very savvy way to increase your home's value, particularly right before a sale.

Because You Need More Room

Along with the technological upgrades that can provide increased energy efficiency to your home, many homeowners are choosing to upgrade their garage door—not to create a more convenient way to store their belongings, but to increase the square footage of their home. A seldom-used garage can convert fantastically into an extra bedroom or a home office, which is particularly helpful right now since many people are having to work from home. Regardless, a new garage door installation can help add the space you need, without the inconvenience of having to move to a brand-new home.
