3 Common Garage Door Problems And Ways Homeowners Should Address Them

Posted on: 12 June 2019

If you have a home, the garage door is one of the more important components of it. Unfortunately, it may not always work as it should. Here are three common problems you'll probably face at some point and solutions for them.

1.  Misaligned Track

The track is what the garage door travels on, and as a result, it needs to be completely straight. Otherwise, the rollers connected to this track may have a hard time moving.

If your track is misaligned, you probably can't fix this issue yourself. Instead, you'll need to contact a garage door repair specialist.

They have special equipment that enables them to manipulate the track back into its correct position. This manipulation will be completely safe, and it won't take long to complete. If the track can't be shifted back into place, the repair specialist can also set up a new one with your consent.

2.  Malfunctioning Sensors

When the sensors at the bottom of your garage door start malfunctioning, your garage door may go up and down without being directed. This can be frustrating and cause premature wear and tear on your garage door.

The problem may be as simple as dirty lenses. Inspect them carefully, and see if dirt or debris has built up on them over the months.

If a lens is dirty, you need to scrub it with some warm water. Use a soft rag too so that you don't cause damage to the lens.

Or, the sensors may just need to be re-aligned to where they're facing each other. If that doesn't do the trick, you may need to replace them completely.

3.  Damaged Torsion Springs

One of the more serious problems that can happen to your garage door is damage to the torsion springs. Fixing them is extremely technical and can even be dangerous, making it necessary to consult with a garage door technician.

They'll carefully examine the torsion springs to see if the springs can be salvaged. If they can't, the technician can set up a new set quickly and safely. The specialist will test the garage door out after installation to make sure everything is running smoothly.

Having a garage door on your property means taking good care of it over the years. It may stop working correctly at some point, but you don't have to worry when you follow the right repair protocol. Professionals are always willing to help when there are more severe issues. For more information, contact a garage door repair service such as Shoff Door Co.
