New Garage Door? Know How You Can Maintain It

Posted on: 31 March 2019

If you have recently had a new garage door installed, one of your goals may be to start maintaining it better now that you have a fresh start without any problems. Here are three ways that you can maintain your garage door:

Clean The Door

The exterior of a garage door collects a ton of dirt over the years. A storm can cause dirt and rain to splash against the surface, which will leave the door with some ugly stains. If you happen to live near the ocean, salt can damage a door if left on the surface. In general, a lack of cleaning is going to cause the material to deteriorate faster than normal.

It will be a good idea to start cleaning the door as soon as you notice that it has become dirty. It's as simple as washing the surface with soapy water and a sponge to get rid of the layer of grime. Not only will the garage door look clean to you and your neighbors, but you'll get some extra years out of the door as well.

Maintain The Tracks

Tracks of garage doors see plenty of wear and tear over the years. The tracks are what hold up the garage door every time it opens, and help guide the door down when it closes. It's possible for the tracks to shift over time, with fasteners becoming loose or going missing, which puts stress on your garage door opener.

You'll want to take a look at the tracks periodically to ensure that it is in good shape. Look at the fasteners, make sure that they are tight, and replace those that are missing. You can also test the balance of the garage door by disconnecting it from the automatic opener and making sure that it is holding the door in the proper position. A door that is balanced will not fall at any given point of the door being suspended, and falling down is a sign that something could be wrong with the tracks.

Inspect The Safety Mechanism

If you have kids or pets, you'll want to verify that the safety mechanism of the door is working properly. This prevents the door from closing on anything in the path of the door with two mechanisms. Test these mechanisms by closing the door and crossing the path of the electronic eye, and putting pressure on the door as if was coming in contact with an object. In both instances, the door should go into reverse and go back to the open position.
